Wondering What I've Been Doing This Christmas? Christmas 09 Nails (NOTD # 1)

Doing up your nails to a theme is always fun. For Christmas Red and Green always serve as 'traditional' colours, and no one will ever question why your nails are two colours!

(Sorry for the fuzzy pics =S)
As you can see my nails are in red with green glitter and green with red glitter. Getting specific colours are always a pain where I live, so a little ingenuity goes a long way when getting the colours and looks that you want. Here is what I used:

  • True Red nail polish
  • Green glitter nail polish
  • Tree Green eyeshadow (or replace with tree green nail polish)
  • Red glitter nail polish
  • One or two cotton tips

If you don't have glitter nail polish just put some cosmetic or craft glitter in a bottle of clear/top coat/base coat nail varnish. I would suspect the finer the glitter the better the coverage and put more or less depending on how easily you want the glitter to apply itself (for this you will need quite a bit to cover in one coat). I find that the cheap brands of nail polish do the job just fine and I wouldn't spend $60 myself for some Chanel or Estee Lauder (personal preference as always). They chip as much as the cheap stuff and if you're looking for some damage control go with top coat instead.

First paint all your nails except for your ring finger in red nail polish. This will take 1~2 coats depending on the opacity of your nail polish. Just cover enough so that you don't see streaks and avoid over painting your nails. Leave to dry a couple minutes.

Second, simply coat 2~3 coats of green glitter nail polish on your red nails to build up a good visible layer of glitter. As the nail polish is quite clear this will take a few minutes to dry for each coat.

Then you start on your green nails (if you're good at multitasking and avoiding mishaps, do this while you're waiting to dry between coats). First grab a cotton tip and collect green eyeshadow thickly and in a powder. Wipe this pigment onto your ring finger. Collect more eyeshadow on the cotton tip. Paint a coat of green glitter nail polish and quickly rub the eyeshadow from the cotton tip into the nail polish. Do not over work the nail polish. Add another layer of nail polish and eyeshadow, making sure not to mix the nail polish from the cotton tip into your palette, until you get the desired coverage. Finish off with red glitter eyeshadow (2~3 coats) and remember to do the same to your other hand.

And there you have it! Christmas fingers that will light up a room! Merry Christmas to you all!

Love Porcelaine.
